and also guys if we’re going to discuss ethnic accuracy let’s just break down this name:

khan noonien singh

his first name is an islamic last name

his last name is a sikh last name

i’m indian and i don’t even know what a noonien is

if the name isn’t even properly indian

don’t complain when the actor isn’t

don’t defend my people against white washing

when you don’t even understand what you’re ‘defending’ us against

It isn’t properly Indian, but people are complaining because of the novels that came out that are even supposed to be outside of canon that gave the character a backstory of being from Northern India with Khan supposedly being a title that I most recognize as being Mongolian, but apparently was also used by Punjabis.

So there’s technically a reason to complain to them, but I *would* also complain about the point you bring up about how the writers of both the novel and the TV series ORIGINALLY did not pick an authentic Indian name if they want to complain about that. It’s only fair.

IMHO, I don’t really care because it’s a movie that takes place in the future with a character from a timeline that DIDN’T EVEN HAPPEN in real life. I think Benedict did a good job and that’s good enough to me. I don’t know why people have to nitpick about an ethnicity issue that didn’t exist in the 90s when the character “supposedly” according to the timeline that was written in the 1960s came about and existed.

Not only that, but the character is supposed to be a genetically engineered super human. You could just the same argue that it was a side effect of the engineering. I don’t know. Make something up. It’s science fiction. The whole story was written by people in the 1960s who probably could not even imagine what the demographics would be in the 1990s, but they put the setting there because to them that was the future and they took a wild stab at it.

Plus, if people want to whine about casting, the original Khan wasn’t even Indian either. They cast someone who was Mexican, which if you wanna go there, is like saying that all non-whites are the same.

Hell, if I wanted to nitpick even more, his backstory says that his area that he ruled over spanned from Asia to the Middle East not unlike the real life Great Khan, Genghis Khan. If people want to whine about plotholes with the new movie, I’m going to complain about how come the original Khan in the TV series wasn’t Mongolian and ruling in CHINA. I don’t care if that’s too literal, I love reading about Temujin (and Borte) and even though he was a foreigner, as a Chinese person I’m proud that he would have been a reference to China. Even this character Khan’s military tactics, while drastic, are A LOT like the tactics the Mongolians used where if you surrendered and didn’t act like a dick, they basically left you alone and let you keep your autonomy. If you fought, they pretty much destroyed the whole town and killed almost everyone leaving but a few alive to spread fear and terror. I think it would have been far more interesting if they made him Mongolian and trying to recreate the Mongol Empire. (Bear in mind, I am also biased because I have stated at times to friends that if I had a time machine, I would go back in time and save Genghis Khan with anti-biotics or whatever just so that he could conquer Europe and we would be speaking Mongolian (or even Chinese) now instead of English because that sounds like fun. I *would* screw with time like that.)

Just in general, there are too many issues with the character in a multitude of different ways, so I’m just going to not care about the specifics of it and just enjoy the movie. If there’s too many issues to something already broken, it’s just better to let it go because there’s no way everyone’s going to be happy about it. Even if the casting was different, elitist purists would still find something to complain about it just because he still would not be EXACTLY LIKE their beloved 1960s creation.

EDIT: Okie, looked up something on the only other Noonien I remember in the Star Trek universe, the scientist Noonien Soong who created Data (I grew up in the generation that watched TNG). Apparently it was the name of Gene Roddenberry’s Chinese friend that he wanted to get in contact with again. CHINESE. Not an authentically Chinese name, but the name of a Chinese person, which I’m going to take and put toward my argument that if we want to nitpick, Khan should have been Mongolian or Chinese to begin with.

Re-working old companion in relationships is one of the reasons why I like New Who in general.

Part of the appeal for Amy Pond, Clara Oswald, and River Song for me is that they actually fight with and challenge The Doctor. Donna did as well, but I really enjoy that that kind of a dynamic is played with more under Moffat and while not everyone likes his writing, that’s something I really enjoy about his Doctor.

Not that the ladies during RTD were weak either, but Rose and Martha I really felt just followed the Doctor more and while it’s fine to follow along with the madman with a box, I find it refreshing to also have companions that knock him off his high horse every now and then.

Into Darkness Thoughts - Because some oldbies are haters

This came from a comment I posted in response to something on one of the Star Trek related pages I follow on Facebook because the page runners were really happy about the film because at least it keeps the franchise alive whereas some people were like crying travesty because they’re elitist purists and want everyone to watch everything, which is ridiculous and unreasonable because who the crap has the time for that and if you force people to do that, THEY WILL NOT LIKE YOUR FRANCHISE.

o.oa So okay, I like Into Darkness (not just because of the eye candy and Benedict Cumberbatch is in it, but that helps a lot *O*) and while I’m not a super new fan that got into the franchise from JJ’s films, I also didn’t really grow up with the original TV series. When I was growing up, TNG was the newest and freshest and that I loved. I loved the series that came after as well and even when Enterprise came out I was super happy especially about Hoshi. It wasn’t even that the original TV series wasn’t available. It was re-run, but late at night and since I was a kid, I was fundamentally NOT INTERESTED IN IT because it was old. It’s probably blasphemy to some of you, but 1) I’m female and already a different demographic than most of you and 2) when you’re 10, it’s not exactly the most fun or coolest thing to watch shows that are old when all of your peers are watching the plethora of newer shows on TV, 3) for some reason or another Kirk fundamentally offended me, so I was even further motivated not to watch. Not only that, I’ve always heard throughout the years nods to the Wrath of Khan and had very little clue why I should even care. Now that I am older I have a bit more appreciation for the original TV series I follow George Takei like many other young people, but I still have no interest to go back and re-watch ALL OF THOSE EPISODES. That is a completely unreasonable expectation that anyone who’s only a bit curious should force themselves to go back and WATCH EVERYTHING.

All that said, I was initially really iffy about the reboot anyway, but I ended up LOVING it. And to be honest, when I left the theatre immediately after watching Into Darkness, I wasn’t all like “THAT WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVER” like I was with Iron Man 3, but I still liked it well enough and it made enough of a subtle impact on me that I’ve been thinking about it all day and getting myself more and more curious. Not only that, but after all that thinking I’ve already decided that I like it enough that actually I do want to see it again because I like what it had to offer. Also, even with my misgivings about going back and re-watching all of the original series, the film did inspire me to get curious about Khan’s full back story, the original story, and so I looked it up online and did some reading. It’s not a full experience, but it’s enough to keep the franchise alive and you know, from my reading I actually think I am willing to give the ep he was in and the 2nd movie a shot to understand more about the character. Is that a bad thing? HELL NO. I’m sure there are plenty others out there like me who are newer fans or fringe fans who just did the same thing and it’s people like that that will be keeping the franchise going. Some of us may get even more into it and become like you hardcore folk, but to be completely hard-headed, and all-or-nothing about Into Darkness will only cause the death of the very thing you love. Franchises survive and continue being endearing through growth, change, taking risks and growing the fanbase.

Heck, in recent years, I literally got into SO MANY other fandoms. For instance, last summer I totally got into Doctor Who and downed seasons 1-6 of New Who WITHIN A MONTH because it was really good and I got addicted. Doctor Who is on its 50th Anniversary as well yet most of the older Whovians I’ve run into didn’t treat the newbies like crap just because they didn’t watch Classic Who. DW has seriously grown SO MUCH as well and part of it is because of how they embrace change and let the writers experiment while making throwbacks and mentions to different incarnations as well as generally not be elitist pricks to people who didn’t get a chance to watch all the episodes they did. It keeps things fresh. This past weekend too, the season 7 finale was about “The Name of the Doctor” and some of the Whovians were previously flipping a freakin’ gasket about The Doctor’s real name being revealed, but at least GAVE THEIR TRUST to the writers and saved judgment until after they saw the episode and the writers delivered with a pretty damn epic episode. THAT’S HOW YOU KEEP A FRANCHISE GOING FOR 50 YEARS. Not only that, but the way they pulled off the nostalgic nods to the past got me really curious and I would kick a puppy to get my hands on all of Classic Who. The key thing is to not shove all of the past down the viewers’ throats. That’s elitist and asinine because no one will want to do it if you put a mountain of material in front of them. Just give them a really good taste and they’ll look it up themselves when they get hooked and obsessed.

Other series I’m adding to this list of not shoving things down people’s throats include the Kamen Rider series (43 years) and Super Sentai (39 years) and they each respectively celebrated their anniversary series with series that cameo-d the suits of the previous series since their television formula consisted of a new series every year. Even with that though, the anniversary series gave me a taste of the worlds of the past series and I want to go back and watch those as well.

Also, if you want to nitpick about things, bear in mind also that the events that would have set up events in Into Darkness according to the Trek timeline happened in the 90s, which would be jarring to an audience considering THEY DIDN’T HAPPEN. That original idea of the Eugenics Wars was created in a time that was before the 90s because to the writers then, THAT WAS THE FUTURE and the things they wrote about was a representation of their time. Hell, the original air date of the episode that Khan first appeared was in 1967 before important real life historical events like say the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. Do you think that maybe, JUST MAYBE the original backstory behind the character might be a little different after the impact of the death of Dr. King who preached turning the other cheek? Not only that, but what about the Japanese American redress of 1986? Timeline-wise, do you think that maybe actual real life political events where we as a country and humans learned a lesson that MAYBE you shouldn’t be dicks to other people and throw them in prison for no reason or because you’re paranoid would effect the story? My guess is probably and these are holes I found with the original story because I’m a kid that grew up with this history, enjoying more rights, knew to respect people, and simply grew up with influences that make the Eugenics Wars seem unrealistic. I like the fact that Into Darkness skimped over some of the details of the original just because they don’t fit or make sense with the kind of lives we live in 2013 and if you can’t connect to the lives of the audience now, it’s basically game over. You’re dead in the water and you can’t connect with the audience and make new fans. Just consider for a moment that maybe the timeline could use at least a little bit of a re-write to represent the way history really played out.

Also, I just want to say that after all the anime I’ve watched, I have a thing for lab experiments and beings that come out of genetic experimentation and stuff like that.

Which leads me to say, that “John Harrison” reminds me of Mewtwo. ToT

I hope this is okay for a submission. I have a Japanese copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf with the sewing machine unlocked, so I decided to make some DW clothes for my fellow Whovians who will be getting the game and because making my characters cosplay is fun. One’s a TARDIS dress and the other is the 11th Doctor’s outfit. You can’t make pants though, so yeah.

Also, the game makes the dress stretchy and stuff in different parts on its own and it’s hard to predict, but close enough. X_x When you’re designing everything’s on a 32x32 pixel square.

Still, the QR codes are supposed to work on the American and European games too, so I hope any Whovians getting the games can have fun using these to dress up like The Doctor and the TARDIS.

Yes, it did.

Playing games became a bonding activity in my family especially between my sister and myself and our Dad. Our parents are divorced and some time before my Dad moved out, he set up his old Intellivision and Atari 2600 to show us something. We instantly got into it and had tons of fun. By this time Super Nintendos were already out, but we never played game systems before and these old games that came out before we were born were fun enough.

When our Dad came to visit us too, he’d take us out for pizza and then we’d play Street Fighter in the arcade. After awhile we did eventually get an SNES and we had home versions of Street Fighter II Turbo and our Dad encouraged our interest by getting us guides, which I read over and over again religiously learning about all the characters and how to use them and how to get through each opponent. Still, I was never really all that good at it, and my Dad probably wasn’t super pro at it either, but he was better at it than me and I remember thinking he was really amazing whenever I saw him play. He’d always help me out when I got stuck in the games too.

Because these experiences though, I got positively brought into the world of geek culture and it was a great resource for me. I admired the characters in games and even though some of them were frustrating and gave me heart attacks from running in fear from monsters, it was always fun and my Dad would always be on the lookout for new games for us.
